Shopify Collabs is a product for both creators and Shopify merchants. Creators can discover Shopify brands and promote their products. Shopify merchants can discover creators as well and manage how they promote products and pay them.

Project details
Based on Dovetale, affiliate marketing platform for creators and merchants that Shopify acquired in early 2022, the team expanded the creator experience to make their product experience richer. This is also the first time Shopify built a product for creators who don’t have their own stores.

Creators are a new type of Shopify’s audience and we took a stab at a new design system that is better suited for them, by intentionally differentiating the experience with the existing design system. It’s more expressive and playful. Also the experience is designed for mobile, unlike the existing Shopify experience optimized for desktop.
We focused on rigorously validating our assumptions through interviews with creators and domain experts, as it’s a new field for Shopify. We made sure that terminology and positioning of the product resonate with creators, therefore it’s easy for them to adapt to Shopify Collabs.

Another project that I led during my time at Collabs was automatic payouts for merchants. It’s time-consuming to pay creators manually especially if you work with lots of creators and we wanted to automate the experience for them to save time and energy.
Due to the dependencies of other platforms, we had to navigate technical complexities to make the experience as simple as possible. As a result, a majority of payouts are currently handled by this automatic payouts feature.
